A Visit to Exhibitions at Charleston in Lewes and
Charleston in Firle
Wednesday 5th February 2025
Last few remaining seats available!
We will travel by coach departing from Crowbrough at 9.15am to Charleston in Lewes where our group will split their time between two exhibitions:
Collecting Modernism: Pablo Picasso to Winifred Nicholson. Over 80 paintings from the Radev Collection are on show by some of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, including Picasso, Winifred Nicholson, Modigliani, Graham Sutherland and key Bloomsbury figures such as Roger Fry, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. Follow the extraordinary story of how a modern art collection came into being, passed on between three homes: those of Eddie Sackville-West, Eardley Knollys and Mattei Radev.
Grayson Perry: A Temple for Everyone. An exhibition by one of Britain’s best known artists of over 30 works exploring the meaning of ‘home’, ranging from textiles and pots to ceramic tiles and woodcuts.
Following lunch in Lewes (we can recommend cafés or you can bring your own packed lunch), we shall leave Lewes at 1.45pm to travel onto Charleston in Firle to visit the exhibition Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines: a radical art school. Here we will delve into the ground breaking artistic careers of Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines who founded the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in 1937, and the exhibition features over 80 pieces from private collections and public institutions. Their work shaped the careers of many influential artists, including Prunella Clough, Lucian Freud, and Maggi Hambling.
There is an alternative option for the afternoon, a tour of Charleston Farmhouse which includes Vanessa Bell portraits.
We will be leaving Charleston by 4.00pm for return to Crowborough.
